Q. Why is this service offered?
A. This service was created to provide an e-mail account for any student who wants it, especially those currently without access to e-mail. Our goal is to provide a reliable, practical, secure, feature rich web mail environment without banner advertisements. Functionality includes providing faculty and staff lists to communicate with students enrolled in specific classes or programs.
Q. How do I get an e-mail account?
A. If you have registered for a class at CPCC your email account is ready to be activated at http://email.cpcc.edu web site. Youll need to have your social security number and date of birth handy to activate it. Upon activation, you will be asked to choose a password and your email account username will be displayed (e.g. car32f5d ... it might be a good idea to print it for future reference). After setting your password your account will be active.
Q. How do I access to this e-mail service?
A. CPCC student email system is available at http://email.cpcc.edu/ from any place where you have access to the Internet and a web browser.
Q. How do I find out my user name for CPCC e-mail?
A. You can find out your user name at the http://email.cpcc.edu website by providing your Social Security Number and date of birth.
Q. How do I select an email account password? Can I use any password I want? What if I forget my password?
A. You will select a password for your account when you first activate it. Your password can be any combination of letters and numbers you like, but must be at least 6 characters in length. If you forget your password you can always reset it at http://email.cpcc.edu site.
Q. What features are available in the CPCC student email system?
A. Web based access to email allows for easy access from any computer with internet access and a web browser. Integrated email features such as spell check, folder functionality and rule management, configurable email filters, incoming and outgoing virus scan, anti-spam mechanism, and faculty and staff address books. There are no banners or advertisements. A full 10 Megs of storage (vs. 2 for Hotmail) allows you to store many more messages.
Q. Can I have my CPCC email forwarded to another address?
A. Of course. If you would like to have your email forwarded, go to http://mycollege.cpcc.edu and press continue. Under the heading "Registration/Student Records", select "Update My Personal Information and Pin Number". Enter the e-mail address you would like your messages forwarded in the field labeled e-mail address.
Q. I listed my private email account when I registered at CPCC, but now I would rather use my CPCC account. How do I stop having my mail forwarded to my private account?
A. If a previous email address for the student is on record with the college, you will be notified when you activate your CPCC email account. This information will be displayed along with your CPCC email account username. If you would rather not have your email forwarded, go to http://mycollege.cpcc.edu and press continue. Under the heading "Registration/Student Records", select "Update My Personal Information and Pin Number". Go to the field for e-mail address and remove your address. If this field is left blank, your CPCC email account will be used by default.
Q. How long can I use CPCC email? Will I lose all my email at the end of every semester?
A. All students who register for a class at CPCC are provided an e-mail account. These e-mail accounts will be reviewed for usage every semester. If you have not registered and do not use the email system for 90 days, all messages in your account will be deleted. Accounts for students who continue to register for classes the following semester will not be deleted regardless of usage.
Q. Is this e-mail just for communicating within the college or can I use it to send and receive messages from friends and family?
A. You can use this e-mail system to communicate with anyone. Just make sure you are following the college acceptable use policy and proper e-mail etiquette. Some excellent resources are available at the following sites. http://www.library.yale.edu/training/netiquette/. http://www.uwec.edu/jerzdg/orr/handouts/TW/e-mail.htm http://www.sice.umkc.edu/public/courses/cs201/mark/email_ettiquette.html http://www.messiah.edu/addept/its/help/software/groupwise/emailetiquette.html http://princeton.lib.wv.us/Internet%20Tutorial/about_e.htm http://www.louisiana.edu/InfoTech/UCSS/Docs/EmailOrientation.html
Q. If I can get important notices forwarded to my hotmail account why should I bother getting a CPCC e-mail account?
A. It is really your choice. You can continue to use your preferred e-mail provider. However, CPCC student e-mail does provide secure (encrypted) communications between instructors and students, along with other nice features (see above).
Q. Will there be any problems if I dont use the college e-mail system and I havent kept my e-mail contact information current?
A. The colleges goal by providing email accounts is to facilitate communications with students. It is important for you to be able to receive critical notices and information quickly and efficiently. E-Mail and web self service are fast becoming the default means for interacting with the college. If you do not use your CPCC e-mail account and do not keep your e-mail contact information accurate, you may miss vital communication from your instructors.
Q. What can I do to stop forwarding my email?
A. Go to http://mycollege.cpcc.edu and press continue. Under the heading "Registration/Student Records", select "Update My Personal Information and Pin Number". Delete the email address currently listed in your profile. College initiated e-mail will now be delivered to your CPCC student e-mail account.
Q. I just got a Roadrunner e-mail and no longer want to use CPCC e-mail. How can I have my e-mail forwarded and have the college contact me at my new e-mail address?
A. Simple. Just update your personal information with the new e-mail address at http://mycollege.cpcc.edu . Your college e-mail will then be forwarded to your preferred e-mail address.
Q. Can I use Outlook Express to collect my CPCC e-mail? Is POP mail or IMAP access supported?
A. College e-mail is accessible only through the web. In an effort to keep e-mail between the college and students secure / encrypted, e-mail clients like Outlook utilizing POP3 and other clear text communications protocols are not supported.
Q. How do I know if I get an e-mail attachment with a virus? How do I know if I sent one with a virus?
A. Virus scanning is built into the CPCC e-mail system. Our email gateway rejects all incoming messages with infected attachments as well as non-infected but executable attachments (*.exe, *.shs, *.bat, *.com, *.vbs, etc), preventing delivery of potential threats. If you send a message that is infected, you will not be notified by email that your message contains a virus.
Q. What happens if I was enrolled in one class section and was part of that list but decided to change sections? Will I keep getting e-mail from the original instructor?
A. Class lists will be updated once every 24 hours. You may get messages until then but once your registration for an alternate section is complete, your list member ship will be updated within 24 hours.
Q. Where can I go if I want to learn to use folder management features within the email system?
A. CPCC Library, Writing Center and other resources on campus may be able to help. You may also want to consider taking a class such as CIS110 - Intro to Computers.
Q. My folder rules stopped working. Where do I go for help?
A. Student e-mail system is based on an extremely reliable Unix platform. Notification of mailbox corruption can be emailed to emailadmin@email.cpcc.edu. Personal technical support for student web mail is not available.
Q. I cannot access my CPCC e-mail account from home. Is there someone at CPCC who can help with connectivity issues I am having?
A. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide support for Internet connectivity issues experienced at home. Your ISP (internet service provider) may be able to help you get connected. If you have trouble accessing your e-mail from within the college (e.g. from a computer lab) ask a lab facilitator for assistance or e-mail your problem to emaildmin@email.cpcc.edu.
Q. What is the benefit of this service to instructors and their students?
A. The primary benefit to faculty and college administration of this system will be the class e-mail lists, facilitating communications from the instructor to the students. All students enrolled in a class will be grouped under an alias. For example all students enrolled in CIS110-Section01 can be addressed by sending e-mail to CIS110-01@email.cpcc.edu. Faculty and staff may want to add the groups of classes they are teaching to the personal address book.
Q. I'm an instructor and some of the students in my class do not receive the e-mails I send to the group. What could be happening?
A. E-mail will definitely be sent to everyone in your class. Most likely your student has an old e-mail address registered with the college and their e-mail is automatically being forwarded to that address. Please ask your student to either check e-mail at the address they have provided the college or go to http://mycollege.cpcc.edu and blank out their e-mail address (see how to stop e-mail forwarding above). This action will cause the system to create an account for them within 24 hours. The student can then go to https://email.cpcc.edu to activate their account and start receiving messages.
Q. Can users on the student email system or outside the college access the class lists?
A. No. Only employees sending email from the College email system can access the email lists.
Q. I am a full time instructor and teach five classes. How can I manage communications for students in each of my classes?
A. We recommend adding the list e.g. CIS110-01-FA@email.cpcc.edu to your address book. Sending an email to this list will automatically send email to all students enrolled in that particular class and section. We also recommend advising your students to put the course number and section (list name) in the subject line of each email they send to you. With the subject line in place you can setup rules in your mailbox to file all messages from that particular class in a folder automatically. Assistance with Eemail rules can be sought at the ITS help desk (5000) or at our web site http://www.cpcc.edu/itservices
Q. Is there an account I can use as an instructor to show my students how to access their email?
A. Yes. You may use the demo account to demonstrate the login process. The username and password are both "demo".
